Thundercats #11 Review – A Monumental Turning Point With Mixed Execution

Updated: Feb 9

Thundercats #11 propels the series into a high-stakes turning point as WilyKat and WilyKit's secret discovery of Mumm-Ra's Black Pyramid finally comes to light. Declan Shalvey crafts a gripping narrative where Lion-O's decision to confront Mumm-Ra in his lair provides a tense and emotional core. The stakes feel monumental, and Shalvey's pacing ensures that every revelation hits with impact. The story's blend of heroism, exploration, and the ever-present threat of annihilation successfully captures the spirit of the ThunderCats lore while keeping the readers on edge.

However, the art by Drew Moss doesn't quite complement the weight of the story. While Moss is undeniably talented, his style in this issue struggles to convey the grandeur and intensity of the ThunderCats' world. The "squished" appearance of the characters' faces detracts from the immersion, particularly in moments meant to convey heightened emotion or tension. This choice in artistic execution may work for other titles but feels out of place in the iconic, larger-than-life universe of the ThunderCats.

Despite the misstep in the art, the issue benefits from a stunning array of variant covers by the likes of Lucio Parrillo, Jae Lee & June Chung, Ivan Tao, and Manix, each bringing a unique and visually striking interpretation of the ThunderCats.

Fans of the series will likely find themselves divided—some engrossed by the narrative while others may find the art distracting. Nonetheless, Shalvey's writing alone ensures that this chapter remains a pivotal and thought-provoking entry in the ongoing saga.
